How to apply to MAP-fis?

You will be required to create a login in the Information System of Porto University.

The number of positions for this  call  12
The total number of positions for this edition is 30.

In the application the following documents will be required:

Copies of academic transcripts;
    • First degree certificate with final grade;
    •  MSc degree certificate with final grade if you have one. If you have not yet completed the MSc but expect to do by the registration deadline for this call (September 19), submit a transcript of your grades so far. Degrees of foreign Universities must have been previously recognized by Direção Geral do Ensino Superior or by a Portuguese Higher Education Institution,  See the DGES site https://www.dges.gov.pt/en/pagina/degree-and-diploma-recognition
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Letter of intent  describing why you  wish to enroll in the MAP-fis program; This letter should contain a description of the research you would like to carry on in MAP-fis;
  • Photocopy of Identity document (passport, citizen card);
  •  Make sure you have three reference letters on you behalf mailed, by their authors, to fmartins@fc.up.pt.


2023/24 edition  dates

  • Third Call until October 27  . Positions 12.
  • Preliminary results of applications are announced by November 11, 2023
  • Applicant's may file preliminary hearing appeals from  November 13 to 27 
  • Definitive ranking by November 29
  • Classes scheduled to begin by October 9; Third call students will miss classes; courses can be taken in the second year.


Opportunities for grants

MAP-fis has been considered a program of excellence by FCT, the Portuguese Government Science and Technology funding agency.  It was  funded with grants from  2013-2017. FCT direct  financing of Doctoral programs has ended.

PhD grants by FCT  can  now be obtained in two ways:

  • FCT national call: already closed for 2023
  • Grants awarded by research centers. These announcements are published in the EURAXESS  portal:

These grants are awarded under the condition that you enroll in a PhD program. Please be aware that these are independent applications. You must apply and be accepted in a Portuguese doctoral program to benefit from an FCT PhD grant, whether from the national call or any of the Research centers.
