How to apply to MAP-fis?

Due to administrative constraints, MAP-fis application deadline has been extended until October 16Y.

You apply online by filling this  Application Form. It will be available from October 10.

There is a registration fee of 55€ which is non-refundable.

If you want to to apply outside the normal application period contact


and mail the documents mentioned below.

  • Copies of academic transcripts;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Letter of intent  describing why you  wish to enroll in the MAP-fis program; This letter should contain a description of the research you would like to carry on in MAP-fis;
  • Photocopy of Identity document (passport, citizen card);
  •  Have three reference letters sent to the e-mail above.
This call is governed by the rules set in the formal announcement.

2017/18  edition  dates

  • Applications are open  until the October  16,   2017;
  • Preliminary results of applications are announced by October 20
  • Appeals have to be filed by November 6;
  • The formal registration in the program takes place in the period from 13 to 17 of  November 2017, at  at University of Porto (Faculdade de Ciências , Universidade do Porto, 4150-701)
  • Classes start January 8 2018, at the University of Porto.

Opportunities for grants

MAP-fis has been considered a program of excellence by FCT, the Portuguese Government Science and Technology funding agency,  It has been funded with grants since 2013. This program has been exceptionally extended one extra year, and MAP-fis is expecting  5 PhD extra grants (four years) for students registering for the first time in 2017-18. The call for these grants is awaiting FCT authorization. Meanwhile you can enroll in MAP-fis and will be notified when the call for grants opens. 

FCT has an a National Call for PhD grants, which is expected to open in January 2018. Though results take a few months, these  grants can fund students since the beginning of MAP-fis 2017-18 edition (grant can be back payed from January 2018.

In addition,  MAP-fis a part of the consortium of Doctoral Programs IDPASC , and MAP-fis applicants in the fields of

  • Particle Physics;
  • Astrophysics; 
  • Cosmology
 are also elligible to apply to IDPASC grants. Check the IDPASC web site for details.

If you apply to the FCT national call or the 
IDPASC call for grants, you must still apply
to entry in the MAP-fis Program.
